About Us

Knox Auto Carpets was established in 1982 and has since become the largest manufacturer and supplier of automotive carpets in Australia. 2021 marks 40 years of dedicated service, during which we have maintained a steadfast commitment to delivering superior quality and distinctive products to the automotive industry. We are sincerely grateful to our loyal customers for their continued support and look forward to progressing together in the years to come.

The company was founded by brothers John and David Burke. Upon completing trade school, David joined John, a qualified mechanic, in undertaking motor trimming projects within John’s garage. The reputation of Knox Motor Trimming quickly grew, and within a year, the business expanded beyond the confines of the garage to a larger factory space. It was during this period that the brothers began exploring opportunities within the moulded car carpet sector.

In 1984, John commenced the meticulous task of developing car moulds, while continuing to service motor trimming contracts. The demand for moulded carpets increased significantly, prompting rapid growth that enabled the acquisition of their first factory in 1987.

Shortly after relocating to their new premises, the brothers decided to cease all motor trimming operations and formally launched Knox Auto Carpets. They further expanded their mould inventory and acquired a second factory to accommodate increasing production requirements.

During this time, both John and David were actively involved in drag racing, with John building engines and David competing. They promoted Knox Auto Carpets by featuring their logo on their XD Falcon, regularly attending events at Calder Park, presenting carpet samples to potential clients. This exposure contributed to substantial business growth and culminated in an Australian drag racing championship victory in 1992.

In 1999, the brothers purchased a carpet manufacturing facility, enabling Knox Auto Carpets to become fully self-sufficient. This acquisition granted them complete control over product quality and colour ranges. They subsequently developed their reproduction 80/20 nylon carpet, known as Classic Loop, which significantly influenced the restoration market for motor trimmers and automotive enthusiasts. This carpet style closely replicates those originally used in vehicles from the late 1960s to early 1970s, including early Ford Falcons (XW, XY), Holden Toranas (LC, LJ), Mustangs, and Chevrolets.

In April 2011, Knox Auto Carpets moved into a newly constructed factory offering substantially increased storage capacity. Shortly thereafter, they acquired moulds from Exact Fit in South Australia, further reinforcing their position as Australia’s premier automotive carpet manufacturer and supplier.

In May 2021, John retired but remains actively engaged in engine building and classic car restoration. Prior to his retirement, John trained David’s son, Hayden, to operate the tufting machines. Today, Hayden oversees the manufacturing process. David continues to manage operations alongside his wife, Ilona, and daughter, Rachel, sharing decades of expertise accrued over 40 years in business.

Knox Auto Carpets is proud to be an Australian-owned, family-operated enterprise, dedicated to delivering precise, high-quality products to both domestic and international markets.
