Our Journey: From Garage to Australia’s Largest Manufacturer
Built on Family, Driven by Quality: The Knox Auto Carpets Story
Knox Auto Carpets was established in 1982 and has grown to become the largest manufacturer and supplier of automotive carpets in Australia.
In 2021, we proudly marked 40 years of dedicated service to the automotive industry — a milestone built on hard work, family values, and an unwavering commitment to quality. We are incredibly grateful to our loyal customers who have supported us throughout the journey, and we look forward to continuing to grow together.
Where It All Began
Knox Auto Carpets was founded by brothers John and David Burke.
After completing trade school, David joined John — a qualified mechanic — working on motor trimming projects in John’s garage. What began as Knox Motor Trimming quickly gained a strong reputation for quality workmanship. Within a year, the business had outgrown the garage and moved into a larger factory.
It was during this time the brothers began exploring opportunities in moulded car carpets — a decision that would shape the future of the company.
The Move into Manufacturing
In 1984, John began developing car moulds while still servicing trimming contracts. Demand for moulded carpets grew rapidly, and by 1987 the brothers had acquired their first factory.
Soon after, they made the decision to cease motor trimming entirely and formally launched Knox Auto Carpets.
With expanding mould inventories and the acquisition of a second factory, production continued to grow.
Racing, Reputation & Growth
Outside of the factory, John and David were deeply involved in drag racing. John built engines, and David raced competitively.
Their XD Falcon proudly displayed the Knox Auto Carpets logo at Calder Park events, where they showcased carpet samples trackside. This grassroots promotion helped build strong industry relationships and significantly expanded brand recognition.
In 1992, their efforts culminated in an Australian drag racing championship victory — a proud moment in both racing and business.
Becoming Fully Self-Sufficient
In 1999, the brothers purchased a carpet manufacturing facility, allowing Knox Auto Carpets to become fully self-sufficient.
This gave them complete control over:
-
Product quality
-
Colour ranges
-
Manufacturing standards
From this investment came the development of their reproduction 80/20 nylon carpet, known as Classic Loop — a product that significantly influenced the restoration market.
Classic Loop closely replicates original carpets used in late 1960s and early 1970s vehicles, including:
-
Ford Falcon XW & XY
-
Holden Torana LC & LJ
-
Early Mustangs
-
Chevrolets
It quickly became a trusted option for restorers and motor trimmers seeking authenticity.
Continued Expansion
In April 2011, Knox Auto Carpets moved into a purpose-built factory with significantly increased storage and production capacity.
Shortly after, the acquisition of moulds from Exact Fit in South Australia further strengthened the company’s position as Australia’s leading automotive carpet manufacturer.
The Next Generation
In May 2021, John retired from day-to-day operations, though he remains actively involved in engine building and classic car restoration.
Prior to retiring, he trained David’s son, Hayden, to operate the tufting machines. Today, Hayden oversees manufacturing operations.
David continues to manage the business alongside his wife, Ilona, and daughter, Rachel — carrying forward more than four decades of knowledge, experience, and industry relationships.
